Why Your Nervous System Needs Jesus and Rest

Why some Christians are trying to solve spiritually what may also need rest, support, and a snack.

Let’s be honest.

Sometimes we’re praying for peace while running on three hours of sleep, two iced coffees, zero boundaries, and emotional confusion.

Then we wonder why everything feels intense.

Friend… it may not all be spiritual warfare.

Some of it may be your nervous system sending a strongly worded email.

You Are Not Just a Spirit Floating Around

God created you with a body, brain, emotions, hormones, and a nervous system.

Meaning: sometimes the breakthrough is prayer.

Sometimes the breakthrough is protein.

Sometimes it’s both.

Romans 12:1 says to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice.

Not your frazzled, overstimulated, stress-seasoned leftovers.

Your body matters to God.

The Holy Spirit Lives in You… Not in Chaos

1 Corinthians 6:19 says your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

A temple.

Not a panic room.

Not a 24-hour emergency hotline.

Not a place where everyone else gets VIP access while you live in exhaustion.

A temple.

Some of us have let stress move in, unpack boxes, and start rearranging furniture.

Why You Can’t Hear God Sometimes

People say, “I just can’t hear God.”

Sometimes that’s a real spiritual ache.

Sometimes your nervous system is saying:

  • We need sleep

  • We need water

  • We need to stop rereading that text like it’s Scripture

  • We need to step away from the phone

  • We need boundaries

  • We may need magnesium

God may still be speaking.

Stress just grabbed the microphone.

Jesus Rested. Please Read That Again.

Jesus withdrew to quiet places. He rested. He slept in a boat during a storm.

Meanwhile many believers feel guilty for sitting down for 14 minutes.

Jesus modeled peace in pressure.

We model refreshing our inbox.

Check With the Spirit Before Reacting

Before sending that paragraph text… pause.

Before assuming rejection… pause.

Before deciding “K” means the relationship is over… pause.

Ask:

  • Holy Spirit, what is true right now?

  • Is this wisdom or is this fear?

  • Do I need discernment… or lunch?

These are mature questions.

Holy Ways to Regulate

1. Breathe and Pray

Inhale: Jesus.

Exhale: Help me not make this weird.

2. Ground Yourself

Feet on floor. Shoulders down. Jaw unclench. You are safe in this moment.

3. Drink Water

Not every crisis is spiritual. Some are dehydration.

4. Rest

Psalm 23 says He makes me lie down.

Some of us are resisting the Lord.

5. Stop Over-Spiritualizing Burnout

You may not need another sign. You may need a Sabbath and to go to bed earlier.

Final Word

Your nervous system is part of your body, and your body matters to God.

Sometimes healing looks like prayer.

Sometimes healing looks like seeking support.

Sometimes healing looks like canceling plans, eating lunch, and charging your phone to 100%.
